چکیده

-Sulfate adsorption on kaolinite was followed at 0.7 ~teq/ml to 99/~eq/ml solution concentrations at 30"C and at pH 6.0, and the amount of OHions released and the change in surface charge were determined. Sulfate was adsorbed at positive and neutral sites by displacing O H 2 and OHgroups, respectively. Adsorption of sulfate occurred predominantly at positive sites at low (0.7/~eq/ml to 0.9/~eq/ ml) solution concentrations, whereas at higher solution concentrations, the proportion of the sulfate adsorbed at the neutral sites increased, varying from 51% at 4.9 #eq/ml to 68% at 99 ~teq/ml. The form of sulfate bonding was apparently governed by the level of the positive charge on the clay surface. Higher positive charge at low and intermediate levels of sulfate saturation resulted in the adsorption of sulfate as a divalent anion by forming a 6-member ring with surface A1. With a decrease in positive charge at higher levels of adsorption, the sulfate ion formed both monodentate and bidentate complexes. Key Words--Adsorption, Bidentate, Hydroxyl, Kaolinite, Monodentate, Sulfate.

Experimental Studies, Response Surface Methodology and Molecular Modeling for Optimization and Mechanism Analysis of Methylene Blue Dye Removal by Different Clays

In this work, three types of natural clays including kaolinite, montmorillonite, and illite with different molecular structures, as adsorbents, are selected for the removal of methylene blue dye, and their performance is investigated. Also the optimization and the analysis of the dye adsorption mechanism are performed using the response surface methodology, molecular modeling, and experimental ...

Chromate Adsorption by Kaolinite

Chromate (CrO4 2-) adsorption was investigated on kaolinite (0.2-2 ~m) saturated with NaC104 over a range of pH. Adsorption increased with decreasing pH because of protonation of chromate and/ or variable charge sites on kaolinite. Chemical pretreatment to remove noncrystalline and crystalline oxide contaminants affected the magnitude ofCrO42adsorption, but not the pH range over which CrO42adso...

Adsorption Characteristics of Bixin on Acid- and Alkali-Treated Kaolinite in Aprotic Solvents

The adsorption of bixin in aprotic solvents onto acid- and alkali-treated kaolinite was investigated. Kaolinite was treated three times, for 6 h each, with 8 M HCl or 5 M KOH. The adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, EDS, and BET-N2. The effects of contact time and dye concentration on adsorption capacity and kinetics, electronic transition of bixin before and after adsorption, and also...

Inconsistency in the triple layer model description of ionic strength dependent boron adsorption.

Understanding anion adsorption mechanisms is necessary to allow prediction of anion adsorption behavior. This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the triple layer model, a chemical surface complexation model, to describe the effect of changes in solution ionic strength (0.01-1.0 M NaCl) and solution pH (3-11) on B adsorption by the iron oxide, goethite, the aluminum oxide, gibbsite, ...

INFLUENCE OF ANION COMPETlTlON ON BORON ADSORPTION BY CLAYS AND SOILS

Boron adsorption on the clay minerals, kaolinite and montmorillonite, and two arid zone soils was investigated as a function of solution pH (3-12) and presence of competing anions (nitrate, sulfate, molybdate, and phosphate) after 2 h of reaction time. Boron adsorption on all materials increased from pH 3 to 8, exhibited a peak at pH 8 to 10, and decreased from pH 10 to 12. Boron adsorption was...
